XM Receiver Activation Status and Re-Activation

Issue: XM Weather Status Changes to ACTXM (Activate XM)

Description:  The XM Weather status may change from ERROR or XMTIMEOUT to ACTXM in certain circumstances.

Discussions: Other than a situation where the XM antenna has no access to the sky (such as in the hangar, etc.) this condition may appear to require attention from XM to “re-activate” the unit. This is not always required and you can save some valuable time and frustration if you first try the following process.  You should be sure that you have a good satellite signal before trying this.

For AnywhereWx for PDA (assuming you’re in XM mode):

1.      Select a map view that updates quickly, such as View > Zoom > 5 NM.

2.      Tap File > AnywhereLink > Switch to AnywhereLink

3.      Wait about 10 seconds

4.      Tap File > AnywhereLink > Switch to XMWX®

Now watch the Wx Status to see if it progresses from INIT to REQST and then to GOOD. This can take 20 seconds or so.  It may briefly flash NOXMSAT during this time.

The XM Receiver Activation screen on the PDA may automatically pop up at this time.  If this happens, the box should report activated within one minute. This process is complete when you see the following codes or text appear in the Activation ID or Activation Status sections:

Activation ID                          Activation Level

“M”, “1”, “2”, or “8”    =          Aviator

“M”, “1”, or “2”           =          Aviator Lite

Please Note: The Activation ID codes may show in different orders or appear with additional codes. Once your Activation ID contains all of the above digits, your box has been activated to that level.

Activation Status                    Activation Level

“Aviator”                      =          Aviator

“Aviator Lite”               =          Aviator Lite

Please Note: On some Wx boxes, the Activation Status will never display “Aviator” or “Aviator Lite”. Your box will be activated if the above Activation ID codes are present.

For AnywhereWx for XP tablet (assuming you’re in XM mode):

1.      Select a map view that updates quickly on your computer, such as a zoom to 5 NM

2.      Tap Settings > Weather Configuration

3.      Find the checkbox labeled “Enable XM Weather” and uncheck it.

4.      Tap OK

5.      Wait about 10 seconds

6.      Tap Settings > Weather Configuration

7.      Find the checkbox labeled “Enable XM Weather” and check it.

8.      Tap OK

Now watch the Wx Status to see if it progresses from INIT to REQST and then to GOOD. This can take 20 seconds or so.  It may briefly flash NOXMSAT during this time.

The XM Receiver Activation screen on the tablet may automatically pop up at this time.  If this happens, the box should report activated within one minute. This process is complete when you see the following codes appear in the Activation ID section:

Activation ID                          Activation Level

“M”, “1”, “2”, or “8”    =          Aviator

“M”, “1”, or “2”           =          Aviator Lite

Please Note: The Activation ID codes may show in different orders or appear with additional codes. Once your Activation ID contains all of the above digits, your box has been activated to that level.

Activation Status                    Activation Level

“Aviator”                      =          Aviator

“Aviator Lite”               =          Aviator Lite

Please Note: On some Wx boxes, the Activation Status will never display “Aviator” or “Aviator Lite”. Your box will be activated if the above Activation ID codes are present.

Re-Activating the XM Radio

If the XM radio does not report that it is activated within a few minutes, you may need to call XM radio and request a reactivate code be sent.

You can do this one of three ways but first, make sure your system is running and properly connected, as it was when you saw the Activation Screen appear.

(NOTE: You can fly once the activation process has been initiated.)

1)      Go to the Internet site www.xmradio.com/refresh

       a)      Type in your 8-character Radio ID, then press Submit.

       b)      The Activation ID shown on the Activation screen should cycle from Not Activated to having codes such as M12 or M128 and the Activation Status should change to Aviator Lite or Aviator. This may take up to 45 minutes. c

       c)      When the Status changes, tap Done and the Wx Age status should now change to GOOD after a few seconds.

2)      Call XM Radio at 800-985-9200 and ask them to run a refresh on your radio. You must give them your Radio ID or your telephone number. See items b and c above.

3)      Call Control Vision at 800-292-1160 and tell the Operator you need help activating your XM radio. See items b and c above.

XM Refresh Update: In the past when a radio refresh was requested, XM would send refresh codes for a two hour period. In an effort to speed up activation times, XM will shorten this period to fifteen minutes. For this reason, we recommend having your unit setup and running with a good signal before requesting a refresh. This XM activation time change is effective starting on the 15th of March 2006.
